Top pick of 2018: Aussie electronic-indie quintet Gold Fields’ ‘Glow’

Melbourne-based group Gold Fields has pulled out all the stops for their latest track ‘Glow’, eight minutes of pure electronic-indie hybrid bliss. Released last month via Haven Sounds, the track oozes a maturity and self-reflexivity that takes form in sonic complexity.

Taken from ‘Gold Fields’ EP of the same name, ‘Glow’ was mixed by indie music genius Tony Espie (The Avalanches, Cut Copy, Architecture in Helsinki); retro synths, churning beats, layered sweet-as-honey vocals and eclectic samples make ‘Glow’ a rollercoaster ride that’s worth getting on, again, again, and again. An exciting Australian headline tour and DJ sets will follow in early 2019, for the talented five-piece.

Shoe-gaze trio Elephant Gym release second full-length album, 'Underwater'

On 'Underwater', Elephant Gym's latest release and second full-length, there was no single composer overseeing the record. To the end of unlocking new sounds for themselves, each member took turns leading production and compositional roles during the creation of the album. The result is an expansive cohesion of diverse songs which flow in and out of one another like water. Vocal cameos by international collaborators provide another compelling dimension to the record, emboldening a group usually known for their instrumental compositions.

Elephant Gym builds worlds through a bass-driven, jazz-and-funk-inflected writing style that teems with agile, articulate excitement. While commonly associated with the subgenre of math-rock, Elephant Gym employs their own unique technical candor, with rhythms and melodies that never cross the line into uncomfortable angularity.

Based in Taiwan, siblings KT and Tell were taught classical music by their mother before meeting drummer Chia-Chen in high school through a music club. Shortly after discovering they all shared the same taste in music, they formed Elephant Gym, solidifying their shared affinity for all varieties of math- and post-rock.

The band explains that "Underwater is an idea about a kind of private, mysterious space." It's a place where one may go to ponder or concentrate, to clear one's head, or to just blow off some steam in solitude. So, too, is 'Underwater' fundamentally about immersion: immersion in the chaos of feeling, living in the throes of being human-sized in the infinite expanse of existence. Elephant Gym deftly weaves this universal concept into their signature sound without ever pulling you out of your personal space, leaving you to yourself underwater.

Austin indie-rock group Gleeson return with eclectic album, The Years Have It

Austin-based rock band/collective Gleeson returns with The Years Have It - a dynamic collection of classicist guitar-pop-etc that by turns celebrates and defies convention, gives and doesn’t give a fuck.

This dichotomy is perfectly illustrated by the album’s bookends: “Holding On” opens with the jagged charm of Twin/Tone-era Replacements; while the closer, a somber cover of “God Only Knows”, strips the original’s orchestration for gentle strings and lonely piano - transforming the Beach Boys classic into a heartbreaking ballad.

In between you’ll find Superdrag’s heavy melodicism, AM-era WilcoBig Star’s gritty jangle, Jayhawks-ian twang, Peanuts-tinged jazz, a kaleidoscopic instrumental, and a choice Kinks cover. The resulting stew is a wild rock and roll trip - and quintessentially Gleeson.

London songstress Chantitown delivers alluring electro-folk mystic 'River' ahead of upcoming EP release

UK-based singer-songwriter, producer and songstress Chantitown shares her latest alluring single "River" ahead of her upcoming self-released EP titled Nightingale, scheduled for December 14th. Since the release of her last compelling body of work, Cause and the Cure EP, which was co-produced and co-composed with Jim Hustwit (Universal Music, National Theatre, Almeida Theatre) who also holds credit as People's Music Award Film and Music Composer, Chantitown has made extraordinary waves across the scene, receiving praise from the likes of CLASH Magazine, Music Week, Paste Magazine and many more.

Taking inspirational cues from legendary song-writers Joni Mitchell, Carol King and Tracy Chapman, with exceptional nods and electronic twists akin to Portishead or MGMT , Chantitown's ability to evoke pure emotion and tell captivating stories throughout her music has transformed her into the powerful songstress she is today - comparable to artists such as Lorde, Bat For Lashes or Aurora for her enchanting yet provocative nature.

"River" by Chantitown boasts her capacity to enthral and impress; this mystical journey begins with plucked guitars, pounded heartbeats and of course, Chantitown's ethereal vocal presence. Breaking into an electro-acoustic section which bleeds emotion and temptation, building and layering upon heartstring-tugged atmospheres, Chantitown certainly wears her heart on her sleeve and feeds on this notion to constantly deliver crisp, wonderfully produced material, setting the bar exceptionally high for aeons to come.

US indie outfit Okey Dokey put on their rose-tinted glasses in their brand new music video, for their track 'When They Get Older (ft. Rayland Baxter)'

Led by Tennessean, Aaron Martin, and Texan, Johny Fisher, Okey Dokey combines the hand-me-down hits of your parents' time with their own synth driven expansions. These talented musicians have just released a brand new music video, for their track 'When They Get Older (ft. Rayland Baxter)', which will have you tickled pink by the end of its viewing.

Martin and Fisher began collaborating in the winter of 2016, recording in a bedroom with guitars, synthesizers, computers, and practically anything they could find lying around the house. Over the next few months, they collaborated with various friends, most of whom are members from other bands, to create what became their debut album. 'Love You, Mean It' was released in January 2017, and, even though the duo had no plans to perform live, they were on tour by March.

After releasing music and touring non stop for a year, the group hit multiple studios with various friends such as Rayland Baxter, Liz Cooper, Nick Bockrath (Cage The Elephant) and others to create their next batch of songs. The band's sophomore grouping of songs titled 'Tell All Your Friend' is an insightfully crafted blend of bedroom pop, chillwave, and classic soul.

Canadian electro duo Humans release latest enthralling, indie-dance infused LP 'Going Late'

Canadian indie-electro duo HUMANS have just released their thrilling brand new LP, Going Late on 16th November via Haven Sounds. Following a few singles the band had premiered ahead of the album's release, the first 'Still About You' has met critical acclaim, receiving extensive radio support and is currently sitting at #5 on CBC Radio 3. The band then released ‘Going Late’, and ‘Breakfast With Liz’ - which received an award for Best Music Video at the Leo Awards 2018.

Having received vast support from the likes of COMPLEX, CLASH Magazine, Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Earmilk, Magnetic Mag and more, Humans have captured the hearts of many, furthering their dizzying, infectious sound and appearing at acclaimed festivals including SXSW, Coachella, The Great Escape, CMJ, Mad Decent Block Party, Beach Goth Festival and more, as well as touring and performing alongside reputable acts such as Flight Facilities, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Sleepy Tom, Sweater Beats, Young Empires and many more.

The new LP Going Late was created with the help of Nik Kozub, featuring Grammy-winning producer Carlos De La Garza on track ‘Still About You’, as well as recruiting Vancouver-based hip-hop artist So Loki on vocals for the track ‘RUN’.

Humans twist and contort their way through innovation throughout Going Late, the band's latest venture into innovative resonance. "Felony" is a groove-fuelled bouncing disco-esque danceable, lush vocals, driving bass pulsations, hard hitting synth work, concise beats and percussive textures push the limits to the ends of the Earth. The album's title track "Going Late" clocking in at just over 10 minutes in length, is soulful escape; intimate vocals sit atop funk-inspired instrumentation, solid basslines and well crafted production techniques are the essence to this journey through neon-lit cityscapes, as "Years" arguably represents its polar opposite; immersive textures all drenched in ambient bliss before erupting into an engaging jungle style drum section. "Water Water" is an atmospheric, anthemic electro-pop body-moving, foot-tapping nod to minimal techno and house, glistening in kaleidoscopic auras and setting the tone for the rest of the album's enthralling experience.

Self-aware 90's-infused indie-pop from UK rising star Fauness: 'Sixteen'

London-based rising-star Fauness has just shared her latest single, an anthemic indie-pop offering with a delectably rebellious edge: 'Sixteen'. The track is just a taste of what's to come on the newcomer's upcoming 'Toxic Femininity' EP, which is slated for released on Jam City’s new label Earthly Records.

The track is wonderfully self-reflective ode to oneself as a young woman. The RnB influences ooze through Fauness' confident delivery, and the message that this young and talented musician pushes forward is one that is truly relatable and that needs to be voiced.

Fauness explains, "Ageing is usually presented as a tragic process to be fought at all costs, a phase when we become uglier, unhappier and increasingly invisible," which she deals with in her infectious new single.

Indie-pop trio, CAEZAR, shares most vulnerable song yet, with their new heartfelt ballad, ‘Take Me There’

CAEZAR has released numerous light-hearted and bouncy indie-synth tracks this year, but their final new music for 2018 sees them wearing their heart on their sleeve. Taken from their upcoming EP ('HAIL!') set for release on the 30th of November via RG Records, ‘Take Me There’ is the first slow jam from this exciting trio.

The two founding members of CAEZAR, Chris Quigley and Rich Gills decided to take their passion for music to the next level when the pair found themselves both suffering from sports injuries that meant they would no longer be able to play rugby for their local club. It was under the lights of the rugby pitch where the two ex-players decided that they would take their previously hidden musical talents to the stage. When Zoe joined the band in 2017, the trio really found their niche. Her soft synths and sweet-as-honey backing vocals helped build on the unique crossover of pop, indie and rock elements that make up the band’s special sound.

‘Take Me There’ will end a stellar year for CAEZAR on a tender note. We’ve come to know them for their jams ‘Hold On’, ‘Somewhere New’ and ‘ Waiting’, so it feels refreshing seeing the group delve into new sounds. ‘Take Me There’ is a falsetto-infused duet that hits all the right notes for an indie-pop ballad, as this track truly shows the talent of their vocal delivery. A tender piano guides the listener throughout, only to be joined by guitars and more percussion towards the dramatic finale of the track. Tender, yet hopeful, ‘Take Me There’ is a solid finish for their EP, allowing CAEZAR to show the world that there’s nothing they can’t do.

If CAEZAR keeps up the steady momentum they had in 2018, then 2019 will be the year you’ll regret not listening to them sooner. Jump aboard the bandwagon and listen to ‘Take Me There’ below:

On 'Take Me There', CAEZAR comments, “A recurring theme throughout this EP is 'movement'. Whether it's excitement, remorse or anticipation - Take Me There is the final expression of this movement - the longing for escape. It's easy to become faded by the weight of day-to-day life, so we wanted to write about the inspiration and hope of striving for something better. The vocal samples and irregular dream beat provides a haunting melody which acts as the perfect crescendo for this journey and for this EP.”

Lisa Papineau shares stop-motion video for indie-pop delight 'Oh Dead On Oh Love' from upcoming 2019 LP

One would be hard-pressed to think of a more quintessential go-to artisan for dynamic and progressive new music than Lisa Papineau. One may even know her voice before they know her name, as we almost couldn’t keep track of her prolific collaborations with, among them; Air, M83, Jun Miyake, Halo Orbit, Jam Da Silva, Anubian Lights, her appearances on the (Academy Award nominated) film Pina, Watchman, Super and Crow II soundtracks, as well as her own projects, Big Sir (her long running project with bassist Juan Alderete) Pet (with composer Tyler Bates) and her eponymous group.

Watch and listen to the title track and accompanying video for 'Oh Dead On Oh Love' taken from the upcoming record by Lisa Papineau below -

On her fourth solo record, Oh Dead On Oh Love, Papineau has created an aural canvas of lush but quietly unsettling arrangements: strings, brass, woodwinds, and other traditional instrumentation fuse organically with ambient tones. Vocal harmonies reminiscent of 70s FM radio super groups twine seamlessly through percussive vocalizations, haunting Yma Sumac or Meredith Monk-like swells unravel into plaintive shouts.

“While writing, I could see the physical landscape of each song plainly,” Papineau explains, “ image in the mind’s eye versus a particular chord... it took some time sitting alone in the woods to figure out how they translated sonically. And how all these fleeting images pulled together into one panorama.”

Lisa Papineau's upcoming LP, Oh Dead On Oh Love is out on February 15th 2019 via Team Player

Tokyo Police Club releases new album; ‘TPC’ - the first in 4 years

Canadian alt-rockers Tokyo Police Club’s fourth full-length album, 'TPC', is out on all platforms as of 5 October and was released via Dine Alone Records. It’s been more than 4 years since the rockers released the critically acclaimed 2014 album, 'Forcefield'. The band will also be embarking on an album tour consisting of more than 20 dates across multiple countries (many of which are already sold out).

The release of Tokyo Police Club's 'TPC' album will mark an important moment for this group of musicians, as it almost never came to fruition. Tokyo Police Club drummer Greg Alsop explains, “The feeling that we were so close to breaking up gave us the freedom to enjoy each other more, to enjoy making music together … If we’re not doing it for the sake of being a successful band, but just trying to make an album we’re happy with, it takes the pressure off. The expectation was just that we’d do something that would make us happy.”

In the midst of a near-disbanding, David Monks managed to convince the rest of the band that they should not go out without a fight, and not without taking the time to write new music and, importantly, to really enjoy the process. “I think there’s a lot more optimism and a lot less confusion now,” says Monks. “That’s why we called the record ‘TPC’. It was a whole process of looking at the band and deciding what it is. There’s an excitement and optimism. Let’s just let it exist.”

Tokyo Police Club’s latest 12-track record is a true return to their indie-rock ‘n roll roots which made them so popular to begin with. Laced with a couple of ballads in between, there is no shortage of the fun-loving and optimistic Tokyo Police Club that we’ve all came to love. Let 'TPC' be the soundtrack to your holiday romances, road trips with friends, weekend beach visits, Sunday lounging and everything in between. While an all-out stellar album, some of our favourites

Even though 'TPC' is still fresh, it’s already ranked amongst some of our favourite releases for the year. While we’re still deciding on our favourites from the album, some of the standout tracks for us will have to be (in no particular order) ‘Outtatime’, ‘Simple Dude’, ‘Ready To Win’, 'New Blues' and 'Unseen'.

Sit back and enjoy the majesty of Tokyo Police Club’s latest release, 'TPC':
TPC Tracklist:
1. New Blues
2. Pigs
3. Hercules

The band's fourth album is loaded with thoughtful, nuanced rock and roll with an art school spirit and a punk rock heart. AVEC shares new visceral video for most honest track yet, ‘Under Water’

AVEC has shared a brand new single along with an accompanying video for her brand new enticing single ‘Under Water’, taken from her recently released album 'Heaven / Hell' released on 14 September via Earcandy Recordings. AVEC’s latest album Heaven / Hell was produced and mixed by Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, SOAK, Berkeley) at Attica Audio Studios in Ireland. The new single follows success of AVEC’s debut record What If We Never Forget released in February 2018 and the dazzling remix package ‘Waiting For Remixes’ which included remixes by electronic producers Alex Schulz, HOUT and Nora Medin.

Her latest single ‘Under Water; is an extremely personal take on being honest with yourself. It might hurt to be honest with others while keeping your own mental health in check, but in the long run it’s needed. It might feel like you’re “breathing under water”, but if you don’t attempt to swim through the waters, you will end up drowning yourself in negativity.

Watch AVEC's 'Under Water' below -
The music video stars a stellar performance from actress Runa Hansen and was directed, produced and shot by Gabriel Hyden. AVEC’s video for ‘Under Water’ is a gripping and difficult to watch journey of an individual's struggle with self-acceptance. Water is ever present as we see the lead struggle to breathe in simple situations, but fighting it nevertheless. My initial thought was that it’s about anxiety, depression and mental health, but towards the end she accepts her circumstances, making me realise it could also be about self-acceptance. Love who you are, even if you sometimes have to work on it.

Speaking on the music video, AVEC adds, “When I first saw the video for ‘Under Water’ - filled with so many emotions and despair, I got goosebumps all over my body, because it just moved me so much, I can’t even describe it. I love it, I love the whole idea of it and I absolutely love the scenes they shot underwater - she is such an amazing actress!

Discover your own strength with At Pavillon’s freeing music video for ‘Lions’

At Pavillon’s ‘Lions’ has had the internet abuzz recently and it’s finally been given the music video treatment. At Pavillon is an indie group from Austria known by many as a bunch of romantic rebels in matching button-up shirts, all four of the members of At Pavillon hail from Vienna and have an incredible chemistry, on and off stage. The band formed in 2014 and have been working hard ever since; now that they’ve reached great heights in the Austrian scene, the band are spreading their wings and hope to spark interest in other countries around the globe.

‘Lions’ is an incredibly catchy indie-rock song with a chorus that aims to empower and inspire. The energy of this track, and of At Pavillon in general, could be compared to that of indie-rock heavyweights The Kooks, Two Door Cinema Club and The Wombats, while the band’s sound can be held up alongside firm indie-rock favourites Catfish and the Bottlemen and Cage the Elephant

Towards the end of the video, the band members’ eye colour change to a golden hue, implying that they themselves have turned into lions and they believe in the power that they each hold within.
Staying true to the essence of ‘Lions’, the band described the video as a “video about being free, staying true to yourself and fighting for what you believe in”.
