Exclusive interview with Dream Pop duo Pink Lemonade

Dream Pop duo from South West London. Writing, producing and recording from their house, Adam & George have created an original dream-pop sound, attracting a loyal online following using primarily Instagram and Soundcloud.

Pink Lemonade’s unique sound is influenced by the likes of Kanye West, Tame Impala & The 1975; all of which looked to stand out in both sound and aesthetic. After working on projects in the past together, the duo realised they shared the same dream and have now begun refining and crafting their perfect brand. They work primarily in the box, sending ideas back and forth and recording regularly at their home studio. Everything from the music to the brand design is completely self-made.

Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?

In terms of appreciation, I remember hearing earth song by MJ and getting goosebumps, it made me realise all I wanted to do is listen to music. We had all the Oasis albums growing up, so that got me into songwriting.

My entry into production was after I heard Channel Orange for the first time. I begged my mum for Logic Pro and just taught myself. I studied music production at UNI but didn't learn anything new.

Adam is the main producer in the duo though, he studied it at UNI and learnt a LOT!

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?

Most of the time it would start with a little idea in my head and I either reach for the laptop and built up a demo from the midi keyboard or start making a beat to fit the vibe in my head, or I would reach for a guitar and go old school. Both come out with results I’m super happy with to be honest, but yeah, songs are usually pretty fleshed out in my head before they make it to the guitar or laptop.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Watching artists doing what I want to be doing, so when I see Brockhamton playing beautiful shows for their fans that gets me going! I get super inspired after watching films to be honest, there is a film called ‘About Time’, The main theme music in that film inspired a song on our second album called ‘About Time’, ha! I basically took the basic chords and one of the melody lines and wrote a love song around it. I’ll have to credit the dude when it comes to putting it out!

What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic career?

I think, when we got played on BBC introducing, that brought us in and we did an interview. That show goes out to thousands of people so it felt good man. Another time for sure, is when we put out our debut album. I got phone calls and texts all week from friends and family like ‘holy shit man I had no idea you were actually good’ haha.

As a musician, it becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between the art and the business. Is there anything about the music scene that you would personally change?

Probably the fact that if you gave bags of cash, you can get on new music Friday and radio #1 playlists. We've seen it happen a lot.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

That’s hard! I love being in front of people and seeing the response to our music. But we bonded so much over the studio, I look forward to making music every time we get into the studio. but equally, there's nothing like seeing those songs directly make people move and feel something.

What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?

When my closest friends, at our last gig came up to me and said they were really moved and they were close to tears. These are big tough boys so that meant something to me. haha.

What's on your current playlist?

‘Brockhampton’, ‘early Linkin Park’, ‘Hobo Johnsons new stuff’ and ‘Katy Perry’! and I say that with pride.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you in the near future?

2 more albums before the end of the year!

Famous last words?

“I’m so famous”
